Day 5: The Mangroves
On our last full day in KW, we were able to squeeze in one more adventure! We rode our bikes to Stock Island, which was an adventures in itself, and made it to the Lazy Dog outpost. We hopped on a couple of kayaks and explored Florida’s mangroves and crystal clear water. The mangroves were truly unique and nothing like we’ve ever seen. Although we almost got run over by a tiki hut, we made it back to dry land. We had enough time for a dip in the pool before we headed to First Flight for happy hour! First Flight, which was the original ticket office for Pan Am airways, was such a great experience. The drinks were flowing and the snacks overtook our tiny table. We then had to head back to our newfound favorite bar, the Green Parrot, for more root beer barrels. We finished the night swimming in the Eden House pool, where we stayed during our honeymoon!

As in Key West fashion, the next morning we went to Schooner’s Wharf for a hair of the dog. While our flight was cancelled due to weather conditions, we were able to get on standby and made it home safely. A few notable Green Parrot anniversaries on our radar this week.
First, by using a complex combination of fuzzy-memory, celestial calculations, and carbon-dating, we were able to affix a date of June 9th, 2005, exactly 18 calendar years ago, to the day, as the date of the first Johnny Sketch and The Dirty Notes appearance at the Green Parrot.

The Dirty Notes-led by fat-bass, ferocious horns, athletic drumming and inspired guitar and vocals, as well as Mark’s gypsy-jazz electric cello-the notorious NOLA funksters continue to defy typical labels as they extend their streak this weekend reprising their thunderous funk attack with sets at 5:30, 9:00 and 11:00 Friday and Saturday, June 9th and 10th and a 5:30 set on Sunday, June 11th.

Also worth noting, The Green Parrot Ukulele Association will celebrate its 12th anniversary on Wednesday, June 7th.

Pictured, at our 2nd Anniversary Ukulele celebration, are GP Uke-OGs Ashley and Gretchen, bassist Tom Conger and our original Ukulele Night co-hosts Jeff Clark and Tim McAlpine.

Spawned on a whim, or some might say a dare after we found a ukulele on the sidewalk outside the Parrot, the monthly Ukulele Association meetings have become one of the Parrot's cultural crown jewels, giving locals and tourists the chance to ascend to the Parrot stage and be part of "One Ukin' Family"
