Happy Birthday, Jaco

This post is a homage to Ft. Lauderdale native and monster bassist Jaco Pastorius on the occasion of what would have been his 45th birthday. The link I have added to Jaco’s name brings you to Pat Metheny’s liner notes to the 2000 reissue of Jaco’s debut album, “Jaco Pastorius” and is really worth checking out.
This 21 year-old flyer from a Jaco Pastorius show at the Strand Theater was donated to the Green Parrot Archives by our friend Bud Navaro.
Two sad things spring to mind when I see this flyer:
#1 I don’t believe the show at The Strand ever was consumated.
#2 That Cuban Wedding Cake of a Theatre is now a Walgreens.
I was fortunate enough to see Jaco with Weather Report in a hockey arena in Greensboro, North Carolina in the late 70’s. I thank my friend Allen Marshall for that opportunity.
I believe there is a tribute to him being held tonight by “Kilmo” Carl Pacillo, another outstanding south Florida bassist, who was mentored by Pastorius, at Kilmo’s Fort Lauderdale club, Alligator Alley.
