Big Sam’s Funky Nation at The Green Parrot
“New Orleans Style Brass Funk Band”

It’s “Time To Funk It Up” again at The Green Parrot when, hot off the heels of his tour with Allen Toussaint and Elvis Costello, Big Sam brings his Funky Nation to the Parrot stage for one big night of New Orleans style brass band funk on Wednesday, November 22nd, beginning at 10 P.M

Presiding over his Funky Nation and making their Green Parrot debut is Big Sam, A veteran of the storied Dirty Dozen Brass Band ,a big man with an impeccable urban fashion sense, who blows the funk out of his trombone and refuses to let the audience sit still.
Between solos and trombone riffs, Big Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and gets the crowd going both in movement and in replies to his call-and-response MC-style..Many songs on this project include lyrics that promote dancing, shaking, happiness, and getting down right funky
Big Sam was picked up by his longtime heroes, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, at the age of only 19. But three years of performing, touring, and onsite learning later, Big Sam was itching for something more. Thus spawned his solo project, Big Sam’s Funky Nation. Big Sam has since fired up the already high-energy New Orleans big band funk scene with his untouchable lungpower and his zealously animated stage performance.
Big Sam’s Funky Nation has undeniable personality, as well as masterful chops. A talented group of jazz-trained musicians makes up the Funky Nation, bringing with them the improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front section that’s the hallmark of big band funk.
This former Dirty Dozener aims to please attendees, so be sure to catch his energized funk contagion Wednesday, November 22nd the The Green Parrot, your Southermost Center for NOLA Culture of All Kinds at the corner of Southard and Whitehead Streets.
